BILINGUAL THERAPY IN NEWPORT BEACH

Therapy in the Language You Actually Think In.

Some things are hard to say in a second language. I offer therapy in English and Spanish, so you — or your partner, or your family — can be fully understood, in the words that come most naturally.

Why Language Matters in Therapy

Therapy works best when you can say exactly what you mean — not the closest version you can manage in a second language. Nuance, humor, the words that carry the most weight, often live in your first language.

Working with a therapist who's fluent in both English and Spanish means nothing gets lost in translation, and nothing has to be simplified to be understood.

Bilingual Therapy Might Be Right For You If...

You or your partner is more comfortable speaking Spanish than English

You've struggled to find a bilingual therapist who felt like the right fit

You're supporting a family member who's more comfortable in Spanish

You've had therapy before but felt something was lost communicating in a second language

Meet Irene Alvarez de Schwartz, LMFT

I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #155789) fluent in both English and Spanish. I work with individuals, couples, and families who want therapy in the language that feels most natural to them — without having to translate their experience to be understood.

Whether we work together entirely in Spanish, entirely in English, or move between both depending on the moment, my goal is the same: to make sure you're fully heard, in your own words.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are sessions conducted in English, Spanish, or both?

Whichever works best for you. Many clients stick to one language throughout, while others move between English and Spanish depending on the topic or the moment. There's no need to choose in advance — we'll follow whatever feels most natural.

Q: Can we switch between languages during a session?

Yes. It's common — and completely fine — to switch between English and Spanish mid-sentence or mid-session. You don't need to translate yourself or stick to one language the whole time.

Q: Do you work with couples where each partner has a different primary language?

Yes, this is something I work with often. It's common for one partner to be more comfortable in English and the other in Spanish — I can work fluently in both, so neither of you has to translate for the other or lose nuance explaining yourself.

Q: Is bilingual therapy available online as well as in-person?

Yes. I offer bilingual sessions both in-person at my Newport Beach office and online for California residents statewide, in English, Spanish, or both.
